The Key to Serenity |
As the mother of a drug-addicted son,
I had allowed my life to be controlled by one!
My thoughts so focused on making things right,
I spiraled into darkness... oh, where was the light? |
I summoned the courage to crawl through the door
Of a Twelve-Step meeting, wanting despair no more.
What I was seeking I didn't really know
'Til I felt the peace, the love, the "glow"
Of those in the room who were soon to be
An extended family so dear to me. |
They had "something" I knew I wanted, too --
They had smiles on their faces; they were not blue!
Slowly, so slowly, I grasped what they had...
Peace and serenity -- they were no longer sad.
Oh, I wanted some also -- please give me the key
To a life with some happiness and serenity! |
I listened, I reasoned, and it gradually became clear
That I could have a life not governed by fear!
And it seemed almost too simple to be true
That there is but one thing I need to do!
I need to ACCEPT what Life deals me day by day
There are twists and turns over which I have no say. |
That short power-packed Serenity Prayer!
The key to peace it truly does bear!
There are things I can change and things I cannot.
ACCEPTANCE, CHANGE, and WISDOM... words for thought.
I have also learned I must bear in mind
That pain and turmoil I'll continue to find. |
Regardless of circumstances, it's my attitude
That can provide me with serenity and gratitude.
Yes, I -- like others -- have found the key
That unlocks the door to serenity.
It's a change of attitude and acceptance of Life
That frees me from my former strife.
It's not always so easy, I must admit,
But well worth the effort -- every little bit!
One day at a time, I can handle what might come;
To anguish and despair I need not succumb.
You, too, like others can grasp that key
And live a life of happiness and serenity!
