~ A Letter from "Addiction" to a Wife ~
You never knew for sure, But I've been here for awhile. You couldn't see my evil face; I hid behind a smile.
I was there within your life. I slipped in without fear. You were such a trusting wife; I could pull him very near.
I am what they call Addiction... Say it with respect. I controlled your loved one Long before you did suspect.
Once I had him in my grip, I clenched his soul so tight. I stole his self-esteem and dreams Like a thief in the night.
I took his feelings one by one Then watched my work unfold... Every time you cried for Every lie he told.
But I wasn't truly satisfied Until your daughter knew me well. I made sure all your problems Were her private hell.
He'd always leave to find me Anytime and anywhere. It never mattered when you begged... I wouldn't let him care.
He hasn't been to visit me; I've knocked upon his door. Something strange is happening. He's not like he was before.
Could it be he doesn't need me? What gives more than I give? I thought I heard him praying, "Please, God, I wanna live."
I thought I heard you tell him, You love him even more? It felt as if he finally put A lock upon the door.
Then his loved ones held hands tight And circled 'round him wide As if to try to keep me out, And keep him safe inside.
But I remember when he was mine, And I'll try to win him back. I'll be waiting for that stumble And be there to attack.
But then he may forget All the things I stole away. And I can slip back in your life On any given day.
So don't get too comfortable... He's walking that fine line. Without believing in himself, Your loved one will be mine.
